Overfishing

The world’s oceans are over fished. Many fish are extinct, and more are heading that way. Research has revealed that unless we replenish our fisheries, there will not be enough seafood produced naturally to meet the world’s demands. Aquaculture is now trying to fill the obvious void but even that is struggling and, in under some circumstances, can not be always seen as a trustworthy source. However, due to the abuses in the industry, accreditations are now in place regards production, regulating the use if chemicals/ hormones and the intensity of the farming.

It is therefore the role of the individual to carefully chose what they are to eat. In the area of seafood, to be more aware of what they purchase and eat due to the dire nature of the oceans.

Our Oceans

Most countries, including China, have realized the worsening state of our oceans and have started controlling their own fisheries. In 2012, for the first time, China imposed a moratorium on domestic wild catch fishing for 2-3 months annually.

Wild Catch Fishing

Evidence does shows that countries with legislation in effect to police and control it’s wild catch fishing have fish stocks that are being replenished. This has been proven through standards set by United States/Alaska, Canada, and New Zealand for some time and more recently in Europe. Unfortunately, many products in the market are falsely being touted as being sustainable.

What is Sustainable Seafood?

A particular seafood is sustainable if it comes from a fishery with practices that can be maintained indefinitely:

Unfortunately, many products in the market are falsely being touted as being sustainable. The consumer has a responsibility to drive a better policing of this. Diligent purchasers will hopefully begin asking for documentation to substantiate the sources of the products.

At present there is one main accreditation process: MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), whilst another: CCALMR (Centre for Coastal and Land Margin Research) attempts to regulate produce from the Antarctic. These are not perfect, but their philosophy is correct. An MSC or CCAMR accredited product does not however guarantee its sustainability. Sovereign states have their own systems and policing. Information on all these systems is readily available, albeit not necessarily publicised.
